He visto en este libro reflejados en primera persona los sentimientos de los padres a los que les nace un hijo con malformaciones y graves déficits neurológicos. Siempre he tratado en estos casos de ponerme en el lugar de ellos, cosa que según los psicólogos debes intentar aunque nunca lo consigues del todo (tú los ves durante el tiempo de trabajo, luego te vas a casa y «desconectas»), pero en este libro veo por primera vez de manera clara y sencilla todo lo que pasa por la cabeza a esas madres y pienso que ayudará a todos a manejarnos mejor en esas situaciones.

Se dice en algunos ambientes que un ingeniero es aquel que, para expresar sus ideas, necesita apoyarse necesariamente en un croquis representado en un papel. Para elaborar ese croquis utiliza una serie de reglas, equivalentes a las de cualquier otro sistema de comunicación, que conforman las reglas de la Expresión Gráfica en la Ingeniería. En el campo de la ingeniería y de la industria existe por tanto un lenguaje de transmisión de información común que, además, tiene un carácter universal. Existen muchos idiomas y formas de expresión diversa, algunos creados específicamente para determinados campos del saber, y de entre todos estos sistemas de transmisión de información el dibujo técnico es precisamente el lenguaje de transmisión de información gráfica por excelencia. Pero además, el dibujo técnico industrial transmite también información tecnológica, y lo hace de una forma que es universalmente entendida, con muy ligeras variantes, en todos los ambientes de ingeniería de todos los países industrializados.

El esquema básico de todo proyecto de ingeniería se compone de: memoria, planos, pliego de condiciones y presupuesto. Salvo acuerdo contractual en sentido contrario, tanto la memoria como el presupuesto son documentos orientativos. De hecho, por ejemplo, el presupuesto es muchas veces superado por la realidad y este hecho empieza a ser admitido como habitual. El pliego de condiciones recoge las especificaciones concretas de los equipos y sistemas que van a formar parte del proyecto, y bajo ningún concepto deben dejar de seguirse. Por último, los planos recogen toda la información relativa a la geometría y alcance del proyecto, así como la información tecnológica necesaria para su ejecución. De hecho, un proyecto debería poder ser llevado a cabo tan solo con el pliego de condiciones y los planos.

Es evidente, por tanto, que todo ingeniero que vaya a trabajar en temas de ingeniería debe tener un conocimiento profundo en materia de trazado e interpretación de planos técnicos, pues de otro modo su trabajo distará mucho de lo que se espera de él. El trabajo que aquí se presenta está encaminado a abrir una luz en este campo de la formación del ingeniero, que le permita “entender” los planos elaborados por técnicos con una mentalidad muy diferente y, a su vez, “elaborar” unos proyectos que cualquier profesional del entorno industrial pueda interpretar en su propio idioma sin dificultad.
